Fateful by Claudia Gray

Release Date: September 13th 2011

Goodreads:
It's about a servant girl named Tess in 1912, who wants to escape from the house where she works, and most particularly the lecherous young lord of the manor. But that's not her biggest problem. While on a voyage to America, where she plans to escape and start a new life, she meets Alec, who's ruggedly handsome, fabulously wealthy, intelligent and yet so clearly troubled that she'd rather not fall for him, but she does. That also is not her biggest problem. Alec, it turns out, is a werewolf ... one cursed to change every night, unless and until he surrenders his independence and joins the Brotherhood, a pack of violently misogynistic werewolves who have been tracking him for months. You'd think that would be their biggest problem, wouldn't you?

But no. Their biggest problem -- though they don't know it yet -- is that they're aboard the RMS Titanic.

Sound's amazing! :)

Early Review: A Tangle of Magicks by Stephanie Burgis

Pages: 304 Release Date: 1st August 2011 Publisher: Templar Source: Publisher

Goodreads synopsis:

After her antics in A Most Improper Magick, Kat Stephenson is back to cause more chaos! Stepmama drags the family to Bath to find Kat's sister a new suitor. But, unknown to most of its gossipy visitors, Bath is full of wild magic. When Kat uncovers a plot to harness this magic in the Roman Baths, she finds her brother Charles is unwittingly involved. Kat must risk her newfound magical powers as she defies the Order of the Guardians to foil the plot and clear her brother's name.

My review:

‘A Tangle of Magicks’ is a truly magical read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Stephanie Burgis has a captivating way of writing that wraps you up in the storyline.

The settings that were described throughout the novel felt alive and very real, I could see myself in Yorkshire and Bath and The Baths. I enjoyed the fact that some of the places described were actually there in Bath – such as the Roman Baths, this added a mysterious fantasy element to the novel.

The characters all fitted well into the novel and all had their own roles and duties. My favourite has to be Kat or Katherine who is the main protagonist. She doesn’t act like any ordinary twelve year old, or for that matter, any ‘normal’ young lady in Society. Kat does her own thing, says what she likes and is fiercely determined and independent. I liked that she had her faults as well as her good qualities, which made her even more realistic. All of the characters seemed very realistic, from Lady Fotherington –who I despised at first but eventually saw the light, to Charles –who was a silly, bumbling fool but also a good brother as well as many of the other characters throughout.

The plot was magnificent, from the beginning right through until the end, I was hooked. Jam packed full of twists and turns, plot changes, action. Endless! I enjoyed the splashes of humour thrown in here and there, which made the story lighter. ‘A Tangle of Magicks’ was not in any way predictable, it had be guessing until the very last page.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a book full of action, drama, magic and feisty characters!

5 out of 5 stars.

ABOUT YOU:
1.) Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Well... I'm thirty-something :), and married to my best friend. We have two kids... or I should say - teenager's. And we are lucky to live in Maui, Hawaii.
As a kid, I loved sports. I had two younger brothers, and was a tomboy. I didn't like wearing dresses, and went to a private school where we had uniforms - skirts and blouses with long socks. Ugh!
My father was born and raised on Maui, while my mom was a California girl. They met when my mom came to Maui on vacation. The rest is history. I was born in San Francisco, and moved to Maui when I was three, and have been here for 34 years. The only other place I've lived was in Alaska, for only 2 years.
Maui is definitely a cool place to live. Because it's an island, you tend to know a lot of people. It seems that everywhere we go, we run into someone we know, whether friend or relative. (And my husband has a lot of relatives on Maui!)
My parents and brothers all moved to Alaska about 15 years ago. Shhh- But we've been discussing a move back to Alaska. Maui is great, but we've been here so long, we're getting rock fever. I mean... how many places can you go on an island. Believe me... it gets boring after a while. Especially if you've been here all your life. I want to see seasons change, and snow fall, and see some new wildlife. But... that remains to be seen.

I'd love to live in Maui! :D 2.)Is there anybody who influenced or inspired you to write?
There are a few people that have influenced me. First, would be my grandmother. She is an AVID reader. She's 85 and has a book in front of her EVERY single day. My Aunt bought her a Kindle for Christmas. She didn't know what to do, so I had to show her the basic buttons... the ones to get to the next page. Every other day she calls me and says, "Cameo! I need you to come and download me a new book!" I've tried to teach her, but she just can't get it. Oh well... that's what are granddaughters are for. But she was a huge influence in my love for reading, which filled up my head with a visions of writing my own stories.
Before my mother-in-law passed away... one of the last things she told me was... "Keep writing, Cam." Her words still ring in my head and my heart. I miss her.And my husband definitely inspired me, and pushed me to follow my dream of writing. Thanks babe! ;)

Aww, you gran sounds cute! :) 3.)Best book that you have ever bought?
I'd have to say C.S. Lewis - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. When I found that book it became my favorite. I read it over and over. It took me into a world of fantasy, and made me a fan. I loved it!

4.) If you could work with any other author, who would it be?
I'd have to say JK Rowling. She's amazing.

5.) What is your favourite part in a book?
The ending. If the ending is lame, then it kind of makes the whole book lame. But if the ending is great... then everything you read was worth it! :)

ABOUT YOUR BOOK:
1.) Tell us a little bit about your book.
In My Dreams is a supernatural romance, but it's also a thriller. Most readers so far have also said that it's really sad. In My Dreams is about Lizzy and Michael. They're best friends, and are taking their relationship to the next level when.... tragedy strikes. Michael is murdered, but he refuses to cross over because his killer is now after Lizzy. He'll do anything in his power to save her.
This story has a lot of twists and turns, and I must say...is very emotional.

2.) How did you come up with the idea of ‘In My Dreams’?
I love to watch shows or movies on the supernatural or paranormal, and always questioned... What really happens when we die? In My Dreams is an interpretation of what I would love to think. Our loved ones are still around, watching over us, guiding us... It's a super nice thought.

I agree :) 3.) Do you see any of yourself or anyone you know in any of your characters?
Michael has a lot of the same characteristics as my husband. He is handsome :), and has a heart of gold. I think I'm more like Emily, Lizzy's best friend. She's kind of kooky, loud and fun. Well... I like to think I'm fun!

4.) What was your favourite part to write in your novel?
I think my favorite part was the ending. I don't want to give anything away... but I cried and cried while writing it. (I'm laughing at myself right now, thinking of what I must have looked like. Pathetic... Ugh! hahaha)

I cried too! :( 5.) How long did it take for you to write ‘In My Dreams’?
From the time I started, until the time it was finished, it took about two years. The reason is because I had three jobs at the time. Writing was almost impossible. But, I decided to give up my side business (Cameo Candies) which was a favor business. It was doing well, but I had way too much on my plate.
Then, I made my 2011 New Year's resolution... Finish, In My Dreams! And a few months later... it was complete. :)

FUN FACTS:
1.) Dark/Milk/White chocolate?
Milk Chocolate... mmmmm

2.) Coke/Pepsi?
Pepsi

3.) Indoor/ Outdoor?
Outdoor! I love being outside in the sun and fresh air, although you can't tell by my snow white skin. I get teased a lot because I'm whiter than I was when I lived in Alaska. Shows how much I actually get outside! :P

4.) Coffee/ Tea?
Definitely coffee... with lots of cream.

5.) Reading/ Writing? (A toughie I know! :))
Hmmmmm.... that is a tough one. If I had to choose I'd say writing. Writing takes me into another realm, and I get excited whenever I do find time to write. It's a release and actually relaxes me. I'm my happiest when I'm writing and creating new and exciting worlds and stories. I started a children's fantasy story, which has been sitting on the back burner. That will be my 2012 project. Right now, I'm in the process of writing another YA paranormal trilogy. It's gonna be good! :)

Thank you, Stephanie of Steph Likes Books for having me! It's such a pleasure! :)

No problem! Thank you for stopping by my blog today! :D

My Review:

5 stars/5 stars.

Wow. ‘In My Dreams’ by Cameo Renae definitely takes you on one long emotional journey! It’s jam packed full of action, suspense, drama and successfully manages to deal tough subjects such as murder and drugs. It's one dark story that filled with moments of bright light.

I really enjoyed read ‘In My Dreams’, the plot was great and flowed effortlessly. It was constantly turning and shifting with new situations to deal with. I liked the splashes of humour that were thrown in, which made the story lighter.

Liz and Michael are very much in love and I found it heart breaking when events happened that caused him to die. I liked how he made sure she was safe even until the very last page. They’re great characters who had faults as well as good qualities.

I’d recommend this book to anybody who loves their books jam-packed full of action, romance, drama and suspense!

Review: Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

Pages: 443 Release Date: November 13th 2008 Publisher: Razorbill Source: Library

Goodreads synopsis:

Is Rose’ fate to kill the person she loves most? It’s springtime at St. Vladimir’s Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since Mason’s death, Rose hasn’t been feeling quite right. She has dark flashbacks in the middle of practice, can’t concentrate in class, and has terrifying dreams about Lissa. But Rose has an even bigger secret . . . .She’s in love with Dimitri. And this time, it’s way more than a crush.
Then Strigoi target the academy in the deadliest attack in Moroi history, and Dimitri is taken. Rose must protect Lissa at all costs, but keeping her best friend safe could mean losing Dimitri forever…...

My Review:

4.5 stars/5 stars.

I loved it! It’s much better than the previous two in my opinion. Shadow Kiss is much darker than the predecessors.

Shadow Kiss was packed with action! I liked the plot in this one much more than the others. It was fast paced and had me on my toes.

All of the characters developed and relationships changed, particularly between Rose and Mia, Dimitri and Rose, Lissa and Rose and many more. I liked how Mason had his own little part in the story because I thought he was a good character. It also captures Roses’ vulnerability which made her character feel more real.

There are some seriously heart wrenching moments in this book! :( In my copy there was a little snippet of ‘Blood Promise’ and I cannot wait to find out what happens! I’m devouring these books!

Follow Friday (1)

Hello! :) Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee

This weeks question is:

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

I'm going to make this short and sweet :)

This is probably going to be everybody's answer but... J.K.Rowling.

Second, I'd want to speak to Suzanne Collins.

Lastly, I'd choose Cassandra Clare.

Whether I'd actually speak or not is another thing entirely.. I'd probably freeze! :)

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

This book sounds so good! :)

Review: Frostbite by Richelle Mead

Goodreads synopsis:

Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose…

It's winter break at St. Vladimir's, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy's crawling with Guardians—including Rose's hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn't bad enough, Rose's tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason's got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa's head while she's making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy's not taking any risks… This year, St. Vlad's annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price…

My Review:

4.5 stars/5 stars.

I loved Frostbite. It was better than Vampire Academy in my opinion. So, if this is the way to go, it seems the books are only going to get better and better!

Richelle Mead kept up all the tension and suspense that was to be expected. Also, I enjoyed how the romance developed between Rose and Dimitri - The last page! :)

I enjoyed how certain relationships changed and developed, some better than others. I felt so sorry for some of the characters, particularly Mason!

I really enjoyed this! I'm currently reading Shadow Kiss at the moment! :) I needed more!

Recommend to everyone who loves a bit of romance, action and suspense!

Review: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Pages: 332 Release Date: May 26th 2009 Publisher: Puffin Source: Library

Goodreads synopsis:

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My Review:

4.5 stars/5 stars

I really enjoyed this! :) I've read a lot of vampire books and worried it would be same old but it was a fresh take on the genre. It’s the first book in a series and I thought it flowed effortlessly; it’s an easy book to read.

It focuses on the viewpoint of Rose Hathaway, a guardian to Lissa. I liked how she had good traits and bad qualities, it made her seem more tangible. Rose and Lissa have a special “bond” that allows Rose to know what Lissa’s feeling and this is shown to have its positive’s and negative’s throughout.

I liked the romance between Rose and Dimitri (her guardian trainer) I thought it was believable. I like Dimitri as a character and of course, I like forbidden love!  So, I can’t wait to find out how it develops through the series.

The storyline was good with realistic elements such as running away, rebellion, sarcasm, romance, drama and much much more!

It was a great book which kept me reading past midnight. Looking forward to all the others to see how the story unfolds!
